Battle Descriptions
The following descriptions are modified from the Pennsic website. Times, distances, and particular rules may change on the day of the event depending on conditions and number of fighters.
Open Field Battles
5 battles
Duration: Last man standing of each battle, excepting the third battle, which will end with the death of either the King of the Northshield or the King of the Middle (or their designated representatives).
Special Rules:
- Combat Archery in the last two battles.
- All holds are General Holds.
- For the third battle only: Each King (Mid or Northshield only) must be accompanied by a non-fighting banner-bearer. When that King is killed that banner will be lowered. The battle will end by call of the marshals.
Bridge Battles
1 bridge, 3 battles
Control of the center of the bridge at random points during each battle awards 1 war point.
Duration: 15-30 minutes each battle. (Depending on numbers.) At end of each battle fighters within 9 ft of center of each bridge fight for final control.
Special Rules:
- Combat Archery for the third battle only.
- Local Holds until the last 10 minutes or a breakout occurs. Holds within the last 10 minutes or after a breakout occurs are General Holds.
- The center of the bridge will be clearly marked. The marshals will mark a center area the width of the bridge 9 feet to either side of the centerline. Combatants may not cross to the other side of the battlefield except via the bridge.
- Fighting may take place over the hay bales/walls. No fighter may sit, stand, walk, or run on the hay bales. A fighter may use the bales to regain his balance or stop his fall.
- If a fighter's hand, shield, weapon, feet, or any weight-bearing item lands on the ground over the hay bales in order to stop a fall, that fighter is dead and must leave the battle.
- Dead fighters are required to leave the area of the bridges. Any Crowns of the Society for Creative Anachronism may remain as spectators.
Gates of Rome Battle
1 battle
The ancient Aurelian Wall still surrounds the once-mighty Rome. Two great armies meet at the gates of this formidable barrier. We will fight on a reduced field version of the Pennsic battlefield; the dimensions declared here are Pennsic dimensions, though.
Duration: 30-60 minutes. At end of battle fighters within 9 ft of the banner in the center of the gate fight for final control.
Special Rules:
- This 30 minute resurrection battle will be fought across a wall stretching diagonally across a 400' square.
- Openings in the wall will be left to simulate The Gates of Rome. Fighters may pass through these openings and only these openings.
- Some portions of the Aurelian Wall will be designated as 'tall' and may not be fought across or over. Some sections of the wall will be designated as 'low' and may be fought over but not crossed.
- Each army will start behind a line parallel to and 50' from the diagonal line forming the central line of the wall.
- Each army will resurrect at the designated resurrection line.
- This battle will include combat archery, and thrown weapons. Combat archery may occur over one bale high sections.
- A Banner will be placed in each gate. At the end of time, all fighters within 9' of the banner will fight for possession.
- Local Holds until the last 10 minutes. Holds within the last 10 minutes are General Holds.
Rapier Combat Marshal In Charge:
- CAM -
Warder Kevin O'Shaughnessy (Mark Gipson)
mkgipson@charter.net
Schedule:
| Saturday |
| 9 AM: Authorizations, Warm-Ups, Inspections |
10:30 AM: Two Single Combat Tournaments, one after the other
- Round-robin novice tournament with points awarded for victory (double-kills don't count)
- Round-robin open points tournament (2 points for victory, 1 point for effective use of a period technique). The open tournament will clearly need people reasonably conversant with what a period style is supposed to look like. (Double kills mean you BOTH take the loss. Dead is dead. Cut & Thrust is allowed/encouraged if both combatants are authorized and armoured for it.)
|
1:30 PM: "Three Musketeers" Tourney
- Fencers form up into teams of Three (Silly or semi-silly team name required). Then, in a round robin format, each team of "Musketeers", armed as they wish (no RBGs - the powder delivery is late...) faces TWO teams of three Mus...uh, make that SIX "Cardinal's Guards" armed with just single sword (The Cardinal doesn't pay enough for secondaries...). Every team will have a chance to face a combo of two other teams. No Death from Behind. Each team gets one point for each surviving team member and one point for each "Cardinal's Guard" killed. Best possible score is nine. I only know one team of people who have ever achieved that ... ;)
|
| 3 PM: Melees Till We Drop! (primarily utilizing the open field - some with RBGs, Some without. We will see who is available to determine what kinds of battles.) |
